NEW YORK – Following the violent incidents that forced the cancellation of the final stage of the Vuelta a España cycling race in Madrid, the World Jewish Congress issued the following statement:
“The World Jewish Congress echoes the grave concerns of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE) and stands in full support of Spain's Jewish community at this difficult moment.
“That violent mobs were able to seize the streets of a Western democracy is a chilling warning of the dangers to public order and Jewish community safety. These abhorrent acts not only threaten public safety but also fuel antisemitism and undermine the safety of the Jewish community, which must be firmly protected.
“We join the FCJE in urging Spanish authorities to act firmly to prevent the normalization of these disturbing patterns of behavior and to protect Spain’s Jewish community. We further call on the Spanish government to make a clear and public commitment that reaffirms its support for Spanish Jewry and counters the perception that its stance on Israel disregards the safety of Jewish citizens.”
