DALLAS – Amid growing challenges to Jewish identity and unity, the "Zionist Village Square" initiative emerges as a transformative platform aimed at strengthening bonds among Jewish communities worldwide. Developed by the World Jewish Congress (WJC) and the Jewish National Fund (JNF), this project unites young Jewish leaders from both the diaspora and Israel, encouraging meaningful exchanges on shared values and visions for the future.
The origins of the Zionist Village Square date back to 2023, when the WJC launched the "Jewish Leadership Bridge: Our Initiative for a Stronger Jewish Future" in Jerusalem. The gathering brought together 100 WJC Elevate members and 150 Israelis from varied backgrounds, sparking thoughtful and spirited discussions on issues affecting global Jewry. Building on the success of this event, the initiative expanded into Global Salons with affiliates worldwide. By 2024, it included regional gatherings in Tel Aviv and Be’er Sheva, enhanced by a unique WJC and JNF-sponsored competition that inspired innovative ideas for the JNF Zionist Village.
At a special competition in Be’er Sheva, teams were recognized for their exceptional visions. Winners—Elizabeth Chen (New York, USA), Orly Nistel Gavrieloff (Israel), Matija Sabados (The Hague, Netherlands), and Inbar Iluz (Be’er Sheva, Israel)—were invited to present at the JNF Global Conference 2024 in Dallas, Texas. At the Conference, WJC Lauder Fellows Annie Gishen (United Kingdom), Saul Hakim (USA), Pe’er Krut (Canada), and Bella Ingber (USA) demonstrated how debate and inquiry can bring people together.
The Zionist Village Square was conceived to address pressing needs for Jewish unity amidst rising global antisemitism and a waning connection to Zionism among younger generations. It draws inspiration from Jewish tradition’s legacy of constructive debate, from Jewish study halls to foundational discussions among Israel’s early leaders. Guided by the Jewish principle found in the Mishna of maḥloqeth leShem shamayim—debate for the greater good—the initiative encourages young leaders to engage in dialogues on pivotal topics, including the diaspora’s role in supporting Israel and the future of Jewish unity.
Participants develop essential skills such as active listening, respectful communication, and conflict resolution, all while deepening their understanding of what it means to belong to the Jewish people. This journey equips young leaders not only to advocate for their communities but also to build bridges across divides, fostering a unified, resilient Jewish future.
Through this international platform, the Zionist Village Square aims to foster unity and mutual understanding among Jewish communities worldwide, bridging regional perspectives while celebrating a shared identity.
